Through the window: An insider’s look at my vinyl record collection

When the bottom fell out of the record crate in the early nineties, I couldn’t bear to part with my records or my turntable. As it turns out, I’m very happy that I kept them. I played them over the years, interspersed with the glittery new CDs that I’d accumulated. In 2011, my love for vinyl resurged and I started to grow my collection from the original (about 70 records). I focussed on vintage vinyl, but I also on occasion bought modern (i.e., post-2000, often 180+ gram) vinyl records.

Vinyl records, stereo, guitar and Hubble images in my living room.
I use records and labels to divide my collection by artist and composer.

I now have just over 1,800 LPs in my medium-sized record collection. I’ve been lucky enough to receive boxes of records from friends and family who no longer wanted theirs, and I’ve received quite a few as gifts. The rest I’ve purchased myself, in part using gift cards happily received on my birthdays, Father’s Day and Christmas. I’ve shopped in record stores in Ontario (including Ottawa, Perth, Toronto and Thunder Bay), Manitoba (Winnipeg), Nova Scotia (Halifax) and in Virginia (Fairfax). I also have a few dozen records that I’ve purchased around the globe, including Rush’s “Clockwork Angels” and Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown that I bought in Paris, France, and three classical albums I bought in Germany.

Records used to divide my classical collection by artist and composer.

I’ve spent many hours browsing local record stores and talking with their great staff, especially The Record Centre (@therecordcentre) on Wellington Street, Legend Records Kanata (@legendrecordskanata), Legend Records Ottawa ( and their previous locations on Wellington Street, Winona Avenue and in the Lincoln Fields mall), Compact Music ( on Bank Street between Second and Third Avenues, Vertigo Records (@vertigoottawa) and The Turning Point (@turningpointottawa). In September 2019, I lined up for and bought about 40 albums (mostly classical) at the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library sale, and in December 2021, once again I lined up for and purchased over 50 albums and box sets, mostly classical and mostly opera, at another Friends of the Ottawa Public Library sale. I’ve also found a few gems at Value Village (for example, “Lightfoot!”, his debut album).
For this “Through the window: An insider’s look at my vinyl record collection series”, I am posting photos and descriptive text/narrative on specific topics, groups, composers and performers on the records in my collection.
